Portuguese Golf Vacations on a Budget

It’s no secret that when it comes to having a relaxed, enjoyable golfing vacation some countries immediately jump to mind more than others. Some tourist hot spots are not the kind to attract any serious or even part time players, whereas others are specific hot spots for the modern golfer. It’s safe to say when looking at the more highly regarded golfing vacation destinations that Portugal is considered one of the latter.

But it can be easy to forget how costly booking your stay with a specific golfing resort can be, or even how much the price can increase when booking a stay at a resort which is located close to a golf course. Most often than not it’s worth paying the asking price, particularly for the more experienced or discerning player, but there can be a number of ways to save cash on other expenses which come with the general travel of a holiday. Paying the extra costs for staying at a real golfing resort is often far more justifiable when savings can be made other aspects of travel

Making the right choice when you’re considering the locations for your Portuguese vacation is something which can save significant sums of money, even without lowering the quality of your chosen resort. This is simply because some places in Portugal are generally more expensive than others, for example it’s obvious that the capital city of Lisbon will be the most expensive place to stay and to golf. By comparison the smaller city of Lagos is cheaper for both hotels and flights although resorts in the Algarve area are cheaper still, regardless of their star rating. Simply by examining the cheaper, sometimes less popular, but by no means lower quality courses and resorts in other parts of Portugal huge savings are easily made on your stay and more importantly your golfing.

Another way of reducing the overall price of your trip is to drive yourself (and your clubs, if you usually take yours with you) to the airport and then to book your car in with a Bristol airport parking site online. This will easily save you money over booking a taxi with a big enough boot for your suite case and your club bag.

Finally don’t forget that renting clubs when it’s not as expensive as you might expect to take your own set away with you could cause you to spend unnecessary amounts of money. Again this relates back to booking into airport parking rather than a taxi, you’ll save cash on both choices and give yourself a more personal experience in regards to travel.

There are plenty of other ways to save yourself money on golfing vacations and most of them simply require a little research or comparison. A number of websites can provide price comparisons for resorts, cities and specific golf courses and many others can give user provided reviews of the same things. Using these sites and the previously mentioned tips is without a doubt the best way of saving yourself money on golfing vacations.

Portugal has long been regarded a haven for golf. The warming year round temperatures tempt golfers from near and far to test their skills on the greens of the Algarve. Exciting and challenging courses don’t stop there though; there are excellent golfing opportunities afoot across the whole country, even around the capital city of Lisbon where you will find in excess of 20 great courses. Here is a pick of the top 5 courses on offer to well and truly whet your appetite.

Troia

Designed by the famous American golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior, Troia proves to be one of the most enticing golf courses in the country. Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sado Estuary and back dropped by the Arrabida Mountain, the course is found in the Troia region, a celebrated area of natural beauty.  Truly integrated within the surroundings, you can tackle the 18 holes with a par 72 and drink in the fabulous sea views. Beginners will appreciate the on-site lessons and driving range while the more experienced will enjoy the Pro Shop.

Praia D’El Rey

Just a 1 hour journey away using car hire in Lisbon and located on the beautiful sandy coast, Praia D’El Rey is highly commended and was voted the best European course in 2007 by IAGTO. It is still regarded as one of the best on the continent and with par 72, set amongst pine forest and sand dunes. As the second longest par 5 in the country and one of the longest in Europe, hole 17 is particularly worth mentioning and certainly a challenge. Truly a resort that has it all, you can rock up to the luxury accommodation, play a few rounds on the course, relax at the on-site spa and enjoy a plethora of other outdoor activities all in one place.

Quinta do Peru

Set amongst 350 acres of woodland and overlooked by the Arrabida Mountains, Quinta do Peru is found in the Azeitao region well known for its castles, palaces, wines and cheeses. The course, a project by American architect Rocky Roquemore, was cleverly designed rendering it suitable for both new golfers yet still providing a challenge for professional players. Take on the variety of holes interspersed with lakes, visit the driving range and putting green and when the end of the day rolls around, make for the clubhouse and soak up the beautiful views.

Oitavos Dunes

Regarded as one of the world’s best “link” courses and rated the second best course in mainland Europe by GOLF Magazine in 2011, Oitavos Dunes is a special course. Taking its name from the natural sand dunes it sits upon, the course was designed by Arthur Hills, one of the most respected architects in the industry. From the challenging but enjoyably playable 18 hole course, players can enjoy dramatic views across the Sintra Mountains, whilst trying to keep within the par 71. With an extensive range of equipment hire available too, not to mention on site restaurants a club house, you won’t go wrong at Oitavos Dunes.

A resort to truly indulge yourself at, Penha Longa Golf Resort is found nestled in the Sintra Mountains, a stone’s throw from Lisbon. The famous Robert Trent Jones Jr designed the course and it has risen among the ranks to become one of the top 30 courses in Continental Europe. Regularly hosting the Portuguese Open, this course raises excitement. Golf stag weekends: the social alternative to pub crawls

stag do golf

Stag weekends used to be a relatively simple assignment for the best man. In times gone by it was a case of rounding up the boys and heading for a local tavern to toast the groom-to-be and sharing a few embarrassing stories, well-aware that the following morning you’d need to be suited and booted and at the church on time. It’s not like that these days, the stag night has become a stag weekend and the responsibility falls on the best man’s shoulders to deliver something more than a pint or 2 down at the Wheatsheaf.

As a result of this transformation to the stag do, a reputation for laying waste to city centres is starting to cultivate in the stag party legend. Rarely a week now passes without a local paper reporting of violence or anti-social behaviour as a result of a stag party. If you’re looking to give this kind of chaos the swerve, it’s a good idea to look into a golfing stag do, if you want your weekend to be more about spending time with your friends than getting up to mischief. You’ll certainly have half the bruises that you would if you decided to go paintballing…

Golf lends itself supremely well to stag weekends, thanks to its slow and social nature. Because of family commitments or ever-longer working weeks, men have less time to socialise than ever, so this acts as the perfect opportunity for groups of friends to catch up with the backdrop of a competitive event ensuring that you have plenty to talk about in the pub after a swift round of 18, not to mention the loser getting the drinks in.

Whether you’re looking for a stag party at home or overseas there are a great number of courses that offer visitors the opportunity to play their courses for stag parties. Even if you haven’t played before, a quick swing on the driving range and a visit to the putting green will put you in good stead to hold your own against your fellow stag party members. These days it’s also possible to hire clubs from your chosen golf clubhouse and some even throw accommodation and food into the mix, meaning a golf stag weekend can be a one-stop-shop.

The golf stag do is a great option for more senior stag weekends to mark the rites-of-passage for your groom-to-be before he walks up the aisle. Do it in style and visit the Costa Del Sol, have an authentic British golfing stag do on one of the beautiful links courses or even push the boat out and pay a premium to play on one of the famous courses that stage the British Open. Whatever you decide to do, golf and stag weekends are a match made in heaven.

The Future of Golf: Rickie Fowler

Becoming first ever playing in history to become the NCAA player of the year at a freshman level, Rickie Fowler has been shot into the limelight in the golfing community. With a history in motocross racing which he pursued until the age of 14, Rickie may seem like an unlikely candidate for our next great golf star. He clearly expresses his zesty youthfulness though his choice of golfing attire (not to mention his colour coordinated cap, tee and belt combinations) and exciting performances; it becomes clear that Rickie has a long future in the world of golf.

Fowler won the Korean Open by six shots in 2011, keeping the top spot from Rory Mcllroy in second place and South Korean Kim Meen-whee in third. Making a name for his self-early on, Rickie Fowler has maintained a high standard of golf whilst climbing the ladder from childhood motocross enthusiast to rising golf legend, and continues to play with a degree of excellence even in the tensest of moments.

Rickie tackles the course sporting his trademark selection of Puma clothes, and newly endorsed Cobra Amp Driver with devastating skill and accuracy; he is showing his remarkable skill at such a young age and continues to show a lot of promise for the future. We can only hope that Rickie continues to develop at the rate he is doing and set a new standard in this year’s PGA tour.

Travel the UK and Play some Stunning Golf Courses

Today at the Golf Blog, we have a guest author who believes the UK is the place to be when it comes to golfing. If you’re unsure of where to book your golfing holiday this year David may just make your mind up for you!

Ask most golfers about travelling around to visit courses, and the chances are they’ll talk about playing in Spain, Portugal, France or maybe the USA. What many of us fail to realise, however, is that there are hundreds of superb courses right here in Britain, and all that’s needed is a set of wheels and a decent sat-nav to find them.

Whether you’re looking to visit the true home of golf in Scotland, or some of the cliff-top courses in Kent or Cornwall, you can enjoy everything that our wonderful game has to offer. To enjoy such anodyssey with a friend or two is always best, of course, because part of the beauty of golf is the opportunity to discuss what went wrong and what went right over a few drinks and a meal.

Hit the road and soak up the heritage

Larger groups will sometimes require a more spacious vehicle to carry all the clubs and overnight bags, so one member of the party will often contact Nationwide Vehicle Contracts van leasing in order to rent a van for the journey. Other players can then travel by car until they all meet up at the location.

With such a wonderful choice of courses in the UK, you can be forgiven for finding it difficult to make a final decision about where to go. One of the best options is to visit the east coast of Scotland, to sample the delights of the most famous golfing real estate in the world. St Andrews is rightly regarded as the place where golf was born, and playing the 18 iconic holes of the Old Course is something we should all do at least once in our lives.

There are several other courses in the area which are just waiting to be explored, too. They include Kingsbarns, just seven miles from St Andrews. The course features some stunning views of the sea, as well as some quintessentially Scottish undulating fairways. Carnoustie, which regularly plays host to the Open Championship (don’t call it the British Open!), is also a must-play.

Don’t forget the beautiful south!

In the south of England, there are plenty of courses to test even the most accomplished players. Inland delights such as Mannings Heath in Sussex and The Grove in Hertfordshire are well worth a visit, even during the winter months when the temperatures drop, and with the low cost of lease hire vans any number of golfers can join in the fun. If you prefer links courses, try the superb Royal St George’s at Sandwich in Kent, home of the 2011 Open. When the wind is blowing, and it often is, it can be a particularly tough track to negotiate.

David Rice is a UK-based writer and keen golfer. Whenever he gets the opportunity to leave the keyboard, he can be found on his local course, in a futile attempt to lower his 17 handicap.

Why Golf is a perfect activity for your stag do

Why Golf?

The words Golf and Stag-Do are not necessarily ones you would normally associate with each other, however Golf could turn out to be the perfect start or end to your stag weekend. A quick round of golf in the sunshine and fresh air may be just the thing you and your pals need to clear your head and get you reminiscing on the events and stories of the weekend. If you’re looking for a more relaxed Stag Do then why not play the full 18 hole course at your favourite or local course. Golf courses are usually attached to large hotels and therefore accommodation as well as food and drink shouldn’t be a problem. All your necessities are all in one location meaning little or no hassle to you and your party.

Get into the swing of things

Stag Do’s are a great opportunity to try new things! If you are a complete novice then don’t worry, you can book private lessons or have a member show you the ropes and teach you the basics. Learning should be fun and having a couple of people firing their shots way off target could prove a hilarious talking point to your day. We all love those moments where your mate is stuck in the bunker unable to find a way out or where you have found the lake two shots in a row. Every golfer started off as a complete novice, so don’t worry about being useless and just have fun. Another sneaky idea, although not strictly allowed, could be a good old fashioned buggy race between holes, which is sure to add an extra dimension to the day, unless you suffer the misfortune of being asked to leave.

Not just for people in plaid clothing

When most people think of golf they see executives in plaid shorts and fancy polo tops talking business at every tee. This is simply not the case, Golf can easily accommodate Stag do’s whether they are a whole day of relaxed, laid back golf or a quick few drives the morning after a heavy night. Better still is that there are many different types of golf for you to play. For those who aren’t quite at the standard of Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, options like crazy golf or virtual golf still offer the great experience of the tee but without the hassle and possible embarrassment of losing your golf ball in the water hazard.

Overall golf can act as a great platform for you to branch out and try other activities. Over a stag weekend golf can act as a pleasant break between drinking sessions or can simply be a wonderful, chilled day out with your friends. Either way golf should not be overlooked as a possible stag activity as it offers versatility in your planning and can allow you to learn a new skill set and more importantly have a wonderful stag do with your friends.

Those that want to choose an environmentally sound golf course will want to check out St. Omer. The most Extreme Golf Courses in the World

For most people, the word golf brings up images of picturesque landscapes with rolling green hills, quaint little ponds and occasional patches of sand. But if you want to step off the beaten path and try something a little different on your golf holiday this year, then one of these wild, icy and even dangerous golf courses might be just what you are looking for.

extreme golf courses

1. Nullarbor Links Golf Course, Australia

Australia is known for its expansive and unusual golf courses, and the Nullarbor Links Golf Course in Western Australia is no exception. The course has been named as the longest golf course in the world and attracts hundreds of keen golfers every year. The entire course is around 800 miles long and consists of 18 holes with a distance of 50 miles between each one.

2. Uummannaq, Greenland

If you tend to prefer cold to heat then this golf course, located just 370 miles from the Arctic Circle, will certainly fit the bill – although you may have to re-think your apparel. The golf course can be found in the little town of Uumannaq, Greenland, where the annual World Ice Golf Championships are also held. The best thing about this golf course is that you can visit it year after year and it will never be the same. This is because the ice floes, on which the course is built, are constantly shifting.

3. Skukuza Golf Course, South Africa

After a few bone chilling golf sessions in Greenland, you may be looking to heat things up again, which brings us to our next extreme golf course in South Africa. The Skukuza Golf Course has been built within Kruger National Park, and the “Dangerous Animals, Enter at Your Own Risk” notice is not just for show. The golf course was actually built exclusively for safari park employees in 1972, but it has recently been opened to the public as well. The golf course isn’t fenced off from the rest of the park so you will have plenty of opportunity to spot elephants, rhinos and leopards between holes.

4. Ko’olau Golf Club Hawaii

This extraordinary golf club boasts an amazing view of a tropical rainforest on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. But that’s not all golfers can look forward to because the Ko’olau in Hawaii has a reputation for being one of the world’s toughest golf courses. It consists of 18 holes spread out among the expansive tropical green jungle with its ravines and sloping hills. If you are up for the challenge, be sure to bring plenty of balls because losing a few is par for the course.

5. North Star Golf Club

If you are interested in an extreme safari type golf experience, but without the chance of being mauled by a lion at your second hole, then the North Star Golf Club located in Fairbanks, Alaska, might be a good option for you. The scoreboard includes a checklist for spotting animals like moose, marmots and snowshoe hares, and if you go during the summer season you can enjoy 24 hour golfing days, as the sun stays up all night.

By Dan from Wish.co.uk, if you are interested in golf breaks that are a little less extreme then click here to find out more.

How Does the Golf Handicap System Work?

What is the handicap system?

In golf, the handicap system is used to establish fair play between different levels of golfers in tournaments or friendly play. The handicap system is copyrighted by the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) and is a recognised system within the UK and Ireland. It basically measures an amateur golfer’s current standard of play. It also stands as a great way of measuring whether a golfer is making progress and highlights areas of a golfer’s technique requiring improvement. The higher the handicap of the golfer, the lower their golfing ability is considered to be.

How does a handicap work?

The extra shots a handicap player is allowed to take ensures that all golfers of different ability levels can play together as equals using a fair system and makes the game more interesting. The number of handicaps is deducted from the handicap golfer’s score on certain holes. Handicap scores range from 1 to 28 for men and 1 to 36 for women.

A golfer’s handicap score represents how many strokes are allowed to be deducted on particular holes. A scratch player is a person with zero handicaps and is expected to complete the course with the same score as the standard scratch score (SSS) of the course. The scratch score of a course isn’t necessarily the sum of par. The County Union calculates the scratch score by taking the length of the course and naturally difficult conditions into account and bases the SSS on that.

A handicap can also help players when they’re buying golf equipment as many are tailored to the golfer’s ability in order for them to achieve optimum playing at their level.

What are the methods of applying for a handicap?

Only golf clubs affiliated with CONGU may administer handicaps to amateur golfers. In order to obtain a handicap, golfers have to become a member of an affiliated club and submit 3 or more score cards to the club for calculation. The club will then assess a suitable handicap score using the golfer’s lowest score and calculating the difference between that and the scratch score of the course.

How are handicaps applied to different games?

Handicaps are used differently in match play and stroke play. In match play the handicap score is calculated using the difference between the players/teams’ handicaps and is distributed over the holes to be played. For example on an 18 hole course, if player A has a handicap of 18 and player B has a handicap of 24 then player B is allowed 6 strokes over the six hardest holes with no stroke allowance on the remaining 12. Player A would be regarded as the scratch player. Once the handicap has been deducted from player B’s score the winner is then determined on the net score. For example if player B bogeys the hole and player A does it in par, after the handicap is taken off player B’s score both players have achieved a par. This is the net score.

In stroke play, each player uses their individual handicap rather than calculating the difference between different players’ handicaps. So if player A (handicap 18) and player B (handicap 24) were to play, player A would not be regarded as scratch player and would get 18 stoke deductions over the total of the course and player B would get 24. The same system of using the net score applies.
